John McAslan + Partners (JMP) is a leading architectural and design practice, based in London, Edinburgh and Sydney, with a large portfolio of award-winning work both in Britain and overseas. Their work encompasses architecture and urban design across infrastructure, commercial, residential, retail, education and the arts sectors. The practice has an outstanding track-record in transformational regeneration schemes involving culturally and historically significant sites. JMP is the lead consultant of the multidisciplinary team delivering the EIIPR Block C project. JMP’s role in the project will be to listen well, to the community, to stakeholders and to all the relevant departments in the council, and to translate feedback into an inspiring design which will take the city forward through the 21st century whilst not losing its connection with the past.

Gardiner & Theobold

Project Management

Gardiner & Theobald (G&T) is an independent construction and property consultancy delivering Cost Management, Project Management and Specialist Consultancy for the built environment for over 180 years. They are passionate about: delivering a world class service, investing in the best people and remaining financially strong and independent. Gardiner & Theobold are acting as Project Management and Cost Consultant for the delivery of George Square and the Avenues in Block C.

Nigel Dunnet, University of Sheffield


Nigel Dunnett is Professor of Planting Design and Urban Horticulture in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield and Director of Nigel Dunnett Studio. He is one of the world’s leading voices on planting design, and a pioneer of the new ecological approach to planting public spaces.

Modus Operandi

Arts Consultant

Modus Operandi is an independent arts unit with longstanding experience of advocacy and curation of art in the public realm for the benefit of communities. Based in London, they partners with public and private sectors and operates nationally and internationally by invitation. Their role is to research and produce a Public Art Scoping Report for George Square and the Avenues. This will outline a curatorial policy direction for the project and recommend how artists may contribute their creative thinking and output to the project.

New Practice

Stakeholder Engagement

New Practice is an architecture practice based in Glasgow and London who exist to develop the creative capacity of cities and connect people to the decision making processes that underpin their lived experience. New Practice will be delivering stakeholder and community engagement throughout the design of George Square and the associated Avenues in the city centre.

Sustainability and Accessibility

Buro Happold are a world-class global practice of engineers, consultants and advisers. Buro Happold are leading the sustainability and health and wellbeing strategies for the design, to help realise the vision and enable an equitable carbon positive project that enhances the environment and enables the community to flourish.


Transport, Civil, Structural and M&E Engineering

WSP is a leading international professional design consulting firm with offices based locally in Glasgow and in Edinburgh with a proven record of being technical leaders in highways & transportation, civil infrastructure and buildings. WSP is undertaking the design of the transportation, civil infrastructure and utility services coordination necessary to support the delivery of the landscape improvements.


Lighting Design

Established in 2000 with the vision of creating a fluid link between lighting and product design, LAPD creates lit environments that inspire and enhance, drawing on the eclectic backgrounds of our professional team. Working with landscape, urban and interior designers, and architects, in the UK and across the world, we strive to go beyond ordinary lighting schemes. They create environments and experiences that give people reason to dwell, to pause and to admire. For George Square and the Avenues, LAPD are lighting design consultants exploring the transforming and enhancing of the night time environment in a sustainable way.

Peter Drummond Architects


Peter Drummond Architects is an architectural practice specialising in heritage and conservation work, focussing upon adaptive re-use and strategic redevelopment of vulnerable historic sites. PDA are providing the design team with high-level heritage management advice, focussing on the historical and architectural interest of these important sites for the city.

The ambitious redesign of George Square - Glasgow’s principal civic, ceremonial and cultural space - and the surrounding Avenues is part of the wider £115m ‘Avenues’ initiative aimed at improving pedestrian connectivity and priority throughout the city centre, amid new tree planting, rain gardens, cycleways and improved public transport, with sustainability and community at the core of this project.

The transformation of George Square and the adjacent streets, a key part of Glasgow’s package of public realm and infrastructure projects that will deliver the city’s Net Zero ambitions and bring economic, environmental and social benefits, will be funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal, funded by the Scottish and UK Governments.

Glasgow City Region’s £1 Billion City Deal was the first City Deal in Scotland and is one of the largest and the most advanced in the UK. Formed of eight partner councils working to improve Glasgow City Region - one of the largest UK city regions and Scotland's economic powerhouse. Together with key partners they are delivering a programme of work to grow a strong, inclusive and sustainable City Region, and an economy which delivers for all people and businesses.
